With the Hohe Tauern national park, the Gastein valley in the Salzburger Land region provides an impressive paradise for hikers. You can wander for hours over many high-level trails and enjoy magnificent views over the peaks far and wide. Hikers find what they are seeking here: intact, beautiful green landscapes with many small streams, mountain lakes, catered huts in the high pastures, inviting you to step inside with their hearty specialities.

No mass tourism: here, you're guaranteed to find peace and tranquillity, and space to do your own thing, even during high season. The hikers you may meet on your path will greet you in a friendly way, and the local cheesemakers will give you a warm reception.

With us, you can enjoy simple as well as challenging and high-Alpine hikes, without risk on wide and safe paths. The Gastein valley is a diverse hiking area for all levels of ability, from easy to moderate as well as sporty.

Beyond the forest, you will encounter a particularly impressive landscape: above 1,800 metres, you are surrounded by meadows, fragrant flowers and crystal-clear mountain lakes, inviting you to take a refreshing dip.

Hiking with your hosts

You will find some competent hiking advisers right here with us, because we all enjoy hiking! We, Dr Axel and Renate Zitka and our sports support staff regularly join you on hikes and can take you up into the mountains. We hike with you three to four times a week: shorter and gentler trips, as well as longer hikes that take us up into the beautiful high ground above our valley.

Whether you're looking for something family friendly or more of a challenge: we will do all we can to support you and would also be happy to accompany you on hikes through our local area.

Thermal waters and bathing lake

An especially lovely place is our Gastein bathing lake, located just 700 metres from the hotel. You have plenty of space for the whole family on its green meadow.

And if bad weather is approaching: two thermal baths and no fewer than three public swimming pools are there for you to enjoy a relaxing day at the poolside.

At Hotel Sonngastein, even in bad weather, you will find plenty to do, either in the spa area or swimming, playing tennis orhaving fun at the family adventure arena.
